Time for the third and what was to be the final part of my gas powered RC trucks ownership history (more on that later). Before I have told you about my Kyosho Wild Dodge Ram and my Thunder Tiger DT-10 trucks, the good, the bad and the reasons why they were eventually replaced.
After a long time with the DT-10 I was looking for something quite different the next time around. The main problem with the Thunder Tiger stadium truck had been its reliability, it was not uncommon to see something fail each weekend it was taken out. Nothing too major went wrong each time but it all added up and with many of the repairs being impossible to perform out in the field, the down time was significant.
As a result, one of the main criteria for my next gas powered RC purchase was strength and reliability, I wanted something that was engineered in way that it would laugh off the treatment I had submitted my previous gas RC trucks to and just keep on going. Besides reliability the main thing I wanted was decent performance, both handling (where the DT-10 had suffered) and speed.
Looking around at the options my eventual choice came down to either a monster truck (such as the HPI Savage or Traxxas T-Maxx) or a buggy (Thunder Tiger EB4, OFNA Hyper 7 etc.). In the end my decision was largely based around the fact that one of my DT-10 owning friends had just upgraded to a Thunder Tiger EB4 gas powered RC buggy.
Clearly another 1/8th scale buggy would make a better running partner for the EB4 than a monster truck so I too went for a buggy. I didn’t want to get the exact same buggy as my friend so the EB4 was out, as were numerous other buggies which exceeded my budget. I had read a lot of good things about the OFNA Hyper 7 (aka HoBao Hyper 7) so once I had discovered that a local store carried it and all its parts my decision was made.
I had planned on sharing my experience with the Hyper 7 here but since this post is already on the long side I’ll save that for a later post. In the meantime, if you like the sound of the OFNA Hyper 7 buggy then it is still available in the Gas Powered RC Store.
